My least favorite tool in the shop is the table saw. That thing scares the crap out of me! I have visions of my fingers flying across the room and its not pretty. So when I came across Kreg’s new tool, the Kreg Rip Cut, I knew I needed to try it. So I called Kreg and asked if they would like to let me review it. They said sure and sent me one for free. I received no other compensation for this post.
This tool helps you make accurate cuts using your circular saw, much like you would with a table saw.
If you buy one, make sure you read and follow Kreg’s directions but here is a synopsis for you! You can find one on Amazon by clicking here.
First, you slide your circular saw into the slot and secure it.
Then, slide the measuring guide to the correct measurement which can be found along the top of the Rip Cut, and secure the grey lock to keep it in place.
You are ready to cut! The blue block you see on the right of the piece of wood is the guide that keeps your cut even all the way along your board.
The Rip Cut is 24″ long and can be used for either left or right handed cutting. Any cuts over 24″ can’t be done with the Rip Cut.
It is simple to use, as I have found most Kreg tools to be and it gets a ton of table saw work off my husband’s “To Do” list. I do find that the grey locking mechanism can stick or be a bit tough to push into place.
Another thing, if you are cutting an already unevenly cut edge, the edge you cut is going to mimic the existing side. What do I mean by this? Well lets say you are cutting a piece of plywood left over from another project. Maybe the edges of that piece weren’t perfectly cut. If you use the guide it will mirror the edge it is following and that can mean an imperfect cut.
Overall, the Kreg Rip Cut can be a helpful tool especially if you don’t own a table saw. But it isn’t perfect.
UPDATE: After using my Rip Cut for a few months that grey locking mechanism started popping off when I would try to lock it. Try using a piece of wood clamped in place to guide your circular saw instead of this tool.
