If you have ever made Rice Krispy Treats you know that smoothing them out in the pan is the worst job ever. You either need to cover your hands or a spoon in butter to do it or use wax paper, which I never have laying around. But one afternoon I figured out how to make Rice Krispy Treats without the mess!
I was tasked with making these absolutely wonderful marshmallowy treats for my son’s kindergarten class. Because of some allergies in class I made them with lactose free “butter.” This particular time I thought I was pretty slick (get it? butter, slick? HA!) because the last of the dairy free butter that I had left from the other times I had made them was exactly how much I needed. I buttered the baking dish, and threw the rest in the pan to melt.
Once they were ready I plopped them into the baking dish in one big lump ready to flatten them out…….Have you realized where I went wrong?
I had no butter left to coat a spoon to use to smooth them out!!!! Insert horrified face here! If you have ever tried to do this without some sort of grease, you know it is nearly impossible.
You may be thinking, just use oil…..well I was going to, but then I couldn’t remember if there was a soy allergy and the oil I had said something about soy. I was fresh out of wax paper and had no idea what I was going to do. And then it hit me!!! The best nonstick item I have in my cabinet. The Silpat!
This one is about 17 years old and still going strong! Please excuse its “well loved” appearance but it is one of the single most useful tools in my kitchen and it gets put to work often. Don’t ask me why or how it works, just trust that it does.
See how awesome?
You never have to mess around with buttered spoons again.
I know you want to pin this for later so here is a pretty picture.
