I am about to let you into the most embarrassing room in my house. When BHG came to photograph my house, we had to walk in this room and I had to stop everyone and explain that this was where design went to die. I present to you my bedroom, and the multitude of reasons I am joining the $100 Room Challenge to spark my master bedroom makeover! At the end of this post you can find links to all the other bloggers participating in this challenge.

The Ugliest Bedroom in America.
Let’s take a look at all the unfortunate things going on in this room.
You guys, there is an actual hole in my wall and I refuse to tell you how long it has been this way. We built in the doorway to get rid of bifold doors and fit two 6 panel doors, and I never did anything with it. It’s so bad, my camera wouldn’t even focus on it, so it focused on the picture of me and my husband, instead 🙂
I am concerned every morning when I open my curtains, that the rod is going to fall on my head because it is borderline dangling out of the wall. It should probably be parallel to the ceiling…..it’s not.
The bedding is fine, but it is lipstick on a pig in this space. I really need a patterned throw pillow or two, but with a $100 budget I’m thinking some fabric and my sewing machine is in my future.
All the wonderful things our kids gift to us are amazing and I love that they want to share posters and Legos with us, but I am pretty sure we need to figure out a better way to display them.
It is a small room with too much furniture and not enough closet space, or maybe the closet space is underutilized. I have some plywood laying around, I’m thinking I can add some shelving and maximize the space in here.
Yes, I have a television in my bedroom. I have had a TV in my bedroom since I was a kid and, much to my husband’s chagrin, it ain’t gonna change now! I would agree that it does need to look better and the wires need to disappear.
Can you understand why I have never shared this space, there is nothing inspiring about it. I call it my “Monica Closet.” If you are a Friends fan, you get that, if not let me tell you. Monica was a neat freak but she had one closet that she kept under lock and key, and she would throw stuff in there and shut the door and hid it from everyone. That is this room.
My bedroom door is never open when we have company and I tend to walk in the doorway, throw stuff in and walk out. It is truly my least favorite room, but that is about to change.
My wall lamps. I like them, but the walls are going green so I may paint the shades.
The bureau, side tables and mirror are going to stay as well. I would like to build matching side tables down the road, but for now, these are staying. The curtains are neutral and easy, and my budget can go further if I keep them, so stay they will.
Here’s what I would like to do with my $100:
- Paint the walls and ceiling – $25 (I need wall paint but already have ceiling paint.)
- Paint the trim – Free (Already have this paint.)
- Add nail head accent to the giant, dark headboard- $10
- Add shelving to closet – $5 (I already have the plywood and scrap wood to do this I just need shelf pins)
- Make throw pillows – $10
- Change out curtain rod for one that has been sitting on my bedroom floor for a month. – Free
- Add faux shiplap to TV wall – Free (already have this wood left over from dining room project)
- Add shelves under TV – $20
- Purchase floor lamp – $30
- If there is anything left over, some wall art would be great! – $TBD
- Have a bedroom that doesn’t look like a bad before photo – PRICELESS
Here’s a little snapshot of some elements of the room to see how they are all going to come together.
