What gifts do you give to the people in your life that have everything? That was the quandary I faced last Christmas. My two sisters were on my list and I wasn’t quite sure what to get them. I couldn’t think of anything cool and search after search resulted in nothing, nada, zilch. Then, one day I was driving home from dropping the kids at school and it hit me. I do my best thinking when I’m driving. Each of my sisters had lost pets last year and I thought that some DIY pet silhouette pillows would be great gifts for them.
It didn’t even occur to me that I could look online to find some pillows that were already made, it’s just not the way I think.
So off to Hobby Lobby I went, to find some prefab pillow cases and felt.
Here is what you need to add to your shopping list.
I chose thread that matched the pillow cover and was contrasting to the felt. I wanted to see the stitches.
Opt for the peel and stick felt. You can cut your silhouette and stick it to the pillow so it stays put while you sew.
Draw or print a silhouette that you would like to use. If it isn’t big enough, enlarge it before you print it.
Tape the silhouette to the felt and use it as a guide to cut out the felt for your pillow. Then peel the backing off the felt and attach it to the pillow wherever you would like it.
Stick the felt onto the pillow and sew the felt in place. Begin pushing your needle through the pillow and the felt from inside the pillow. Continue, using stitches of whatever size you prefer.
Knot the thread inside the pillow and that’s it!
So cute and easy, right?
Oh, back to my sisters. They loved the pillows. One of them cried. It was worth all the cramps in my fingers sewing them 🙂 I need to learn how to do it with a sewing machine.
